3. Psychometric Tests: Measuring Traits, Not Actions

They can provide powerful insights into a candidate’s potential for success in a role, their resilience, or their natural leadership style.

The crucial distinction is that these tests measure traits, not applied skills. A person might have a personality profile that suggests a high potential for empathy, but that does not guarantee they will demonstrate empathetic behaviour in a difficult client conversation. Psychometrics tell you what a person is like, not what they can do.

4. Behavioral Interviews: Probing the Past to Predict the Future

They are designed to elicit specific examples of past behaviour as a predictor of future performance. If you want to know if a pilot can land a plane in a storm, you do not ask them multiple-choice questions; you put them in a flight simulator. The same principle applies to soft skills. Simulation-based assessment places individuals in realistic, controlled scenarios that require them to apply their skills in real-time. It moves beyond what people say they can do and measures what they actually do when faced with a challenge.

  • Engagement: Well-designed simulations are engaging and motivating for participants, leading to more authentic performance.
  • Comprehensive Analysis: Simulations can capture thousands of data points, providing a holistic view of an individual’s decision-making processes, not just the final outcome.

You cannot measure what you have not defined. The first step is to identify the 6-8 core human capabilities that are most critical to your organisation’s success. Do not reinvent the wheel. Align your framework with externally validated models from organisations like the CBI, World Economic Forum (WEF), and OECD. This ensures you are measuring the skills that truly matter for future workforce readiness.
